Hitchcock spends time in The Birds, introducing the main characters of Daniels as well as Brenner and setting up their relationship prior to any action taking place and thus increasing the suspense. The screenplay was written by the popular writer Evan Hunter, better known by his nickname Ed McBain, from a novella written by Daphne Du Maurier. Hitchcock created a score using electronic sounds instead of a conventional music score. Hitchcock investigated a strange event that happened on the ground in Capitola California, where sooty seabirds attacked a beach in the year 1961. They were thought to be aggressive due to diatom poisoning.
